![]() BigBill54 When did you start Geocaching? I started in January 2006. How did you learn about caching? In the early 1980's, I built a tradeshow display for the Ohio State University Center for Mapping. It explained the Global Positioning Satellite system. [color=#0080FF][size=150]The GPS was initially developed for the US Dept of Defense. Learning about the satellite based positioning and navigation system was very intriguing. Later, after the GPS signals were made available to the public and geocaching began, I read an article about the sport. Late 2005 I saw something online and began to investigate buying a handheld GPSr. On Christmas day 2005 my oldest son was shopping online for a runners watch and found one with a GPS interface so he could track his time, speed, and distance in training for long distance running. I asked him if he'd ever heard of geocaching... he did some research, bought his watch the next day, and found one cache near his home and seven more while in Indianapolis for a conference before New years. It took me a couple of weeks to get my Garmin Etrex and find my first four caches with a friend in Westerville. What was it about geocaching that got you hooked into the game? As a kid, I lived near some woods and a buddy and I used to put things in mason jars and hide them in the woods to go back later and find the treasures. I guess that was what started me on this whole hiding and hunting treasures thing... What kind of equipment do you use (PDA, Garmin, Magellan, software)? I started with a Garmin Vista C but I have upgraded to a Garmin Etrex Vista HCx with a 2 gig micro card that holds the entire North America map set. I use EasyGPS to load my pocket queries directly to the GPSr. I also use a Palm m515, that I bought used, to keep my caching as paperless as possible. I only print the cache pages with puzzles or photos I will need with me when I go searching. I have Cachemate on the PDA to store the cache pages. I also used the Palm Memo Pad to track Travel Bugs. I request Pocket Queries that arrive in an e-mail every Thursday for the closest 750 caches to my home. I can then get the GPS and the PDA up to date before the weekend. What are your all-time favorite cache/S and or adventure while caching? I've always enjoyed events. It's fun to meet other people with whom I share this affliction. With whom do you normally go geocaching? The Good Wife and I have been blessed to be able to travel quite a bit in the past two and a half years. We have cached in 19 states as well as Mexico and Canada. Recently, my son (ShadowOSU) and I won a 'Cache and Dash Event' by finding 16 caches in about 3 hours. Have any "Most embarrassing Geo-moment" you would like to share? Details please! I had driven to Galion, about 45 minutes north of my home, for a 'Meet and Greet' event last fall. There was a cache in a park on my way home so I pulled in to find it at about 10pm. I left the van in the parking lot and headed out with a small tactical flashlight... the kind you have to hold the button in to keep it lit. It's very bright. I found a path that entered the woods and started in. I would only turn on the light for a few seconds to see which way the path was going then I would walk in the darkness. I reached a point where the fallen leaves had entirely covered the path ahead of me as well as behind me. That's when I realized I had not activated the 'tracking' feature on the GPS. I looked around and I couldn't even distinguish where I had come from. I bushwacked my way the last 300 ft to the cache, signed the log and swapped some swag, then headed back out. At this time the batteries in the GPS became too weak to light the screen. Somehow, I made my way back to the footbridge and across the creek. I thought I would be at the car in a matter of minutes. As I stepped off the bridge, I stumbled and dropped the flashlight. As soon as it left my hand it went out and my cellphone was too dim to help. I fell to my knees to pray... and feel around for the light. Somehow in the moonless dark I found the flashlight then made my way back to the car. Total time: 55 minutes for a cache 600 ft from the car. note to self... ALWAYS carry a spare flashlight (I have a 'shake and shine' that uses no batteries.) and some spare batts for the GPS when you go out after dark. What are some things you don't like about geocaching? What are your pet peeves? People that take trackable coins from a cache and do not log taking them and do not pass them along for others to enjoy. I know several people that have had coins disappear from caches. How did you decide on your caching name? I'm 6 ft 4in tall and over 250 lbs. I was born in 1954. What is your favorite type of cache (traditional, multi, puzzle) and why? [color=#0080FF][size=150]... Note! Please avoid using square braces '[ ]' in Announcements or News Posts...
