When did you start Geocaching?
July 29th 2005
How did you learn about caching?
The city we live in (Roseville, Michigan) holds a geocaching 101 class each year through the Parks and Rec Department. After seeing this in the local paper we had to go and see what it was all about.
What was it about geocaching that got you hooked into the game?
The hunt!
What kind of equipment used (PDA, Garmin, Magellan, software)?
Axiom PDA, Garmin 60CSx and a Magellan Sportrak Color, also Microsoft Streets and Trips with GPS for the laptop.
What are your all-time favorite caches and or adventure while caching?
I love puzzles, Earthcaches and Multi's the most then Letterboxes, Webcams, Tradtionals and Virtuals, in that order. The real challenging caches are my cup of tea, high difficulty or high terrain always sparks my interest. One of these would be Nightowl's Midnight Ride by MIDNIGHT RIDERS (GC16K3E) a great example of a fun yet tough cache. All of the Midnight Rider caches fit this bill.
With whom do you normally go geocaching?
Alone, Brummelbear (a friend), The Pink Rat (my daughter) sweet yet evil (my girlfriend) and way too many others to mention. I very often revisit caches with other cachers who have not done the ones I have just to be out in the field.
Have any "Most embarrassing Geo-moment" you would like to share? Details please!
Hard to embarrass me so how about a good story instead? Mike's "Red?" Cache by Mike Landis (GC3142) It took 3 logs to fit the story in. It tried to take my life but I made it out, worth the read.
What are some things you don't like about geocaching?
Like most of the game! What are your pet peeves? Cachers that do not replace the cache as they find them or not caring about the muggle factor, once they found it who cares about the next cachers is the attitude that wears on me.
How did you decide on your caching name?
We had no idea about the name thing until the night before learning about geocaching. We logged on and they wanted a name so my daughter and I figured Rats get into small places and we would be tracking with a GPS so that is how we became Rattrak.
What is your favorite type of cache (traditional, multi, puzzle) and why?
I listed them above but here we go. Puzzles, love to work them out because I am not good at watching TV so I will work on puzzles while in front of the TV. Earthcaches, just the learning about the earth. Multi's as they can be a challenge over a walk up and find, they also show you more than one area, it keeps me interested in the area that way. Letterboxes just because of the challenge of looking for the clues in the story to find the cache. Webcam, they can be hard to get someone to capture the shot and there are so few of these caches left. Traditional's, it's a cache. Virtual's if they visit history, other don't do much for me. I always say "Hide what you like to find" my hides reflect what I have written here.
What items if any do you carry with you when you go on a hunt?
GPS (duh), compass, PDA, Band aids, mirror, headlamp, pens, extra log books, plenty of batteries and TB's.
Tell us about your cache mobile.
Not much to tell, a non discript Dodge Mini Van with an inverter for the computer and chargers.
Do you currently have any caching goals that you are working towards?
No just save money for gas to get out to cache!
Is it all about the numbers?
Not the find numbers for me. Numbers for me are how many FTF's, how many counties with FTF's that is the game I like. Then the other numbers I try and keep inline is a good ratio of non traditional caches, I run about 25% non traditional, the most being traditional type that is a nice percent. That is the only numbers that matter to me!
Which geocachers do you respect or standout to you the most?
Michigan cacher TreePlanter, not tons of finds but near 200 nice hides all over Michigan, he gives us a lot to do! In Ohio I respect BlackBrownDog as they work so many events for others to have fun at, they hunt caches all of the time and their cache placements have been plenty fun for me.
How often do you find yourself driving down the road and thinking about places for cache hides?
All of the time! I have over 200 placements, ok some are events and Cito's but I am always placing caches as well.
Thanks for this interview. Is there anything you would like to add?
Not now but if you ever want more I am never out of caching stories or out of things to talk about in the caching world.
